What is the Autumn Equinox?

For non-scientists, the equinox is an occurrence that happens twice a year when the sun crosses the equator, and day and night are of approximately equal length.  

This year's autumnal equinox occurs on Sept. 23, 2006, 12:03 A.M. EDT and marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

The vernal equinox, which is what the spring equinox is referred to as, occurs on or around March 21 and marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  From a spiritual perspective, the fall equinox is often though of as a time to release the summer and prepare our passage into winter.  We often gather together in celebration and to honor this period of renewal and rest.

There are various traditions which work with the energy of the equinox.  From the Mabon tradition which celebrates this time of year in a ritualistic way, honoring the fruits of the earth and offering special thanks to the Gods and Goddesses that offer them to us; to the Japanese use of this time to honor those who have passed, a special energy of thanks and recognizing our relationship to a deeper energy, whatever we perceive that to be, is present at this time.

You may also notice, at this particular equinox, a feeling of a need for balance and completion.  You could be tapping into the Virgo aspect of this months movement (this is the second month in a row we have a Virgo New Moon cycle happening).  At this time, completion and a focus on taking care of oneself through creation of sensible routines and projects is key.  You could also be tapping into the shift Libra energy which always comes through the equinox to offer a recognition of the times we need balance in our lives.

Take time this solstice to sit with how your life is moving and choose to honor yourself, your loved one's and your spiritual connections at this time as you call forth the next phase of your life and move into the slower, deeper energy of winter.
