10 Tips for Staying Healthy This Season

The turn of the seasons is one of the most common times to catch a cold, flu or virus.  These tips can help you stay healthy during the turn to fall and winter!

1) Wash Your Hands

We often think that using the lotions with sanitizers are enough but actually rinsing and drying your hands is still the best way to stay healthy!

2) Take Extra Vitamin C

1000 - 2000mg of vitamin C per day is one way for adults (children should take children's doses!) to stay healthy during winter months.

3) Sleep More

Extra sleep is needed for most people as the days get darker.  Listen to your body and let it rest when it needs to!

4) Drink More Water

People often think that they need more water in the summer months but truth is, forced heating systems cause more dehydration than sunlight (without the vitamin D boost) so drink that water!

5) Use Non-Fluorescent Lights when Possible

Florescent lighting is dehydrating and can cause fatigue for many people which makes them more susceptible to catching colds and flus.

6)  Eat Breakfast

When you are fatigued and hungry you are more susceptible to catching things.  Make sure to eat during the day to keep that energy up!

7) Hold Boundaries

We often try to be nice and not make those who are sick feel badly but being to nice can mean hugs and touching people who aren't well and that can get you sick.  Be kind but hold your boundaries.  It doesn't help anyone if you get sick too and then give it back to them.

8) Get Exercise

Movement is important for keeping you healthy mind and body in the winter!

9)  Limit Sugars, Fake Sugars and Alcohol

Sugar, nutrasweet, splenda and other sweeteners can weaken the immune system as can alcohol which takes energy from the liver as well.  Limiting these, especially when you are tired, can make a big difference in staying healthy.

10) Control Your Stress Levels

During the winter months people are often more susceptible to stress for various biological reasons.  Keeping your stress under control - with breathing, yoga, meditation, healthy food, healthy conversations and whatever else helps you! - is critical in keeping healthy.

Being stressed out on a consistent basis is an immune-system challenge.  Don't wait to get sick to take a mental-health day.  Take one before you get sick and give yourself a break when you need it!

I wish you a happy, healthy turn to fall!
